UK Baseball falls to No. 6 Ole Miss Tallies 7-5

Tristan Pompey and JaVon Shelby each hit home runs, but the Kentucky baseball team lost at No. 6 Ole Miss, 7-5 on Saturday afternoon at Swayze Field.
With Kentucky leading 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth, Rebel catcher Henri Lartigue hit a three-run homer off of Kentucky closer Sean Hjelle (4-1) to provide the winning runs. Will Stokes (1-0) got the win in relief for Ole Miss.
Kentucky (29-23, 13-14 SEC) scored first when Pompey, a freshman outfielder, hit a two-run shot to right field in the second inning to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. The homer was Pompey’s seventh of the season.
The following inning it was Shelby hitting a three-run homer, his SEC-leading 12th of the season, to boost the Wildcats’ lead to 5-0. The Kentucky third baseman has now homered at least once in each of Kentucky’s last three SEC series.
Kentucky starter Kyle Cody gave the Wildcats six and two-thirds innings of work, allowing Ole Miss (39-13, 17-10) just one earned run on seven hits. Cody struck out seven and walked just one while throwing a career-high 115 pitches.
Sophomore first baseman Evan White extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a pair of singles in the game. Sophomore shortstop Riley Mahan also had a pair of hits for Kentucky, including his 11th double of the season. Pompey also had two hits for the Wildcats.
Kentucky returns to action on Tuesday, facing intrastate rival Murray State in Paducah, Ky. First pitch from Brooks Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET.
