Dakota Gadd recorded her first career hat trick to help lead the University of the Cumberlands women’s soccer team to a 3-0 win over Shawnee State in the quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference tournament Thursday night at East Warren High School. With the win the Patriots advance to the semifinals next Thursday against Lindsey Wilson.
Cumberlands (10-8-1) came out aggressive right from the start of the game. The Patriots threaten to score within the first five minutes but were called for offside which kept the game scoreless. The game remained scoreless until the 13th minute when Mackenzie Novak sent a ball forward to Gadd who headed over the hand of the goalie and then finished it to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead. Later in the first half, Jody LeMaster would connect with Gadd for a goal to extend Cumberlands lead to 2-0 with 19:40 remaining in the first half. Cumberlands looked to add to their lead but Michaela Garner made two saves to keep the game 2-0 at the break.
It was a similar story in the second half as Cumberlands continued to be aggressive and post two shots on frame in the first eight minutes of the second half. In the 59th minute Asha Vilaythong fired a shot towards the goal but it hit off the crossbar keeping the score 2-0. Shawnee State’s (6-7-2) Charity Collins recorded the Bears first shot of the game in the 71st minute, which was saved by Christie Funk. The score remained 2-0 until the 89th minute when Alexis Dreier sent the ball forward to Gadd who connected with the back of the net to give the Patriots a 3-0 lead. Shawnee State looked to cut into the lead but Clarissa McKinney’s shot went wide preserving the 3-0 win.
This is Gadd’s second multi-goal game of her career, the other came on October 31, 2015 when she scored two goals against Shawnee State. LeMaster and Dreier each tallied an assist in the win. The quartet of Erin Bolas, Novak, Rachel Palazzo, and Kathleen Scherer held the Bears to five shots, including none in the first half, to earn their eighth shutout of the season.
This win is Cumberlands first win in the Mid-South Conference game since 2010 when they defeated Rio Grande in penalty kick 6-5.
The Patriots will return to the pitch Thursday, November 10, when they travel to Bowling Green, KY to face top-seed Lindsey Wilson in the semifinals. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. EST.
