The 2017 Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, announced its preseason Watch List on Wednesday, with WKU Football quarterback Mike White as one of the initial 30 candidates. It is the sixth watch list honor for the senior, who is one of two to be recognized from Conference USA.
It is the third quarterback-specific award for which White has earned a spot on a watch list, previously being named among candidates for the Davey O’Brien Award and Johnny Unitas Award, both on July 19. He is also listed on the Maxwell Award, Wuerffel Trophy and Walter Camp Player of the Year Watch Lists.
At the end of June, White attended the Manning Passing Academy in Thibodaux, Louisiana, where he was able to teach youngsters about the position and learn from Archie, Peyton and Eli in the legendary Manning family.
White is no stranger to Manning Award recognition, as he was a “Star of the Week“ performer following his Hilltopper debut vs. Rice to begin the 2016 season. Against the Owls, he completed 25-of-31 passes for 517 yards and three touchdowns as WKU started the year with a 46-14 victory.
The 517 yards was a career high, and the ninth-best mark of the season across the country. Against Houston Baptist a few weeks later, White went 11-of-13 for 225 yards and three touchdowns, adding up to a 306.2 passer rating. That mark was the third-highest for any single game in 2016, and the most efficient game by a WKU quarterback with records dating back to 2000.
The Manning Award is the only annual quarterback honor that includes candidates’ bowl performances in the balloting. The list of 10 finalists will be released Thursday, Nov. 30, with the winner announced in the week following the College Football Playoff National Championship.
