Melanie McHenry had 15 kills, hit .517 and had nine digs to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 25-16, 25-16, 25-18 sweep of host UNLV at the UNLV Challenge Saturday night in Las Vegas. The Cards ran the table at the Challenge to win the tournament.
“We played some great volleyball this weekend,” said Dani Busboom Kelly, UofL head coach. “The most impressive part is we strung together three great matches in a row, which is hard to do. We have been working on consistency and it paid off. We continue to take big steps forward and I am excited to see what we can do this season.”
UofL, which moves to 5-3 on the season, hit .364 with eight blocks and six aces. Amanda Green added 12 kills and Jasmine Bennett and Molly Sauer each had a pair of aces. UNLV (4-6) was led by Mariena Hayden’s 10 kills.
Melanie McHenry and Molly Sauer were named to the All-Challenge Team and setter Wilma Rivera was named Challenge Most Valuable Player.
The Cards jumped on UNLV early in the first set, zooming out to a 12-1 lead that proved insurmountable for the Rebels, who were hampered by .044 hitting and the UofL block. UNLV got within six at 18-12 but fell 25-14 as the Cards kicked into a high gear. Melanie McHenry paced the Cards with eight kills in the set.
UNLV fell behind 10-1 in the second set and had to burn a timeout early. The Rebs managed to cut the lead to six with a 5-0 run at 17-10 and added another 5-0 run later to come within seven at 22-15 but the Cards used .536 hitting to roll to the 25-16 win.
The Rebels enjoyed their only lead of the match when they ran out to a 5-4 mark in the third set. The Cards tied at five and never trailed again. The Cards hit .297 in the set and added a pair of blocks. Tess Clark had four kills.
UofL heads to Kentucky Sept. 15 and then back to Cardinal Arena on Sept. 17 at 3 p.m. to host Kennesaw State.
