Eastern Kentucky University soccer players Emmi Carroll and Haley Kemper have been voted the Ohio Valley Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
It is the first time EKU has had the OVC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week in the same week since Devon Saini (Offensive) and Lauren Fant (Defensive) pulled off the feat in August of 2011.
Carroll was a force up front last week, scoring two key goals to help EKU get two wins and a draw. In Tuesday’s win over East Tennessee State, the senior forward from Cincinnati scored a crucial insurance goal in the 87th minute, beating two defenders to an Anna Hall punt and firing a shot past the keeper to secure the victory. She scored again in Sunday’s win over rival Morehead State, heading in a corner kick in the ninth minute to give the Colonels an early lead. Carroll also led all players with five shots (three of which were on target) in Friday’s draw with Austin Peay. She finished the week with eight shots, six of which were on goal.
Carroll leads EKU with four goals this season, and she now has 15 for her career, which is third most in EKU history.
It is the first time in Carroll’s career she has been named OVC Offensive Player of the Week.
Kemper was named Defensive Player of the Week after coming forward and heading in the equalizer off a corner kick in the 63rd minute to give EKU the 1-1 draw against Austin Peay on Friday. The clutch goal was her first since she moved to center back as a sophomore last season. Kemper also never left the field in all three of EKU’s games last week, helping the Colonels to two wins and a draw. She notably played all 110 minutes of the double-overtime draw with Austin Peay and all 96 minutes of the overtime road win at Morehead State on Sunday.
Kemper is the first Colonel to be named OVC Defensive Player of the Week since Fant earned the honor in October of 2012.
Carroll, Kemper and the Colonels host UT Martin (September 22) and Southeast Missouri (September 24) this weekend at EKU Soccer Field.
