Miyah Watford’s fourth goal of the year was all the Murray State Racers needed, as they defeated Belmont 1-0 and moved into first place in the Ohio Valley Conference At E.S Rose Park in Nashville, Tenn.
Murray State moves to 11-1-2 overall and 6-0-2 in the OVC, while Belmont drops to 9-5-1 overall and 5-3-0 in the OVC.
“Today was all about winning, we knew that Eastern Kentucky fell to Tennessee Tech earlier on. We know we’ve pulled ourselves into a good position, if we win Thursday we’ll win the regular season,” said head coach Jeremy Groves after the win.
In a game dictated by rain and wind, the Racers gave Belmont no room to breathe, with the ball seemingly in the Belmont zone for most of the game. Murray State took 13 shots with four finding their way on target. Along with outshooting Belmont, Murray took all seven corner kicks in the game as well.
At the 64th minute, Harriet Withers put a corner kick into the box, where Watford was able to kick it in amongst a sea of blue and red to give Murray State a 1-0 advantage.
With the win and the loss from EKU, the Racers now hold a two point advantage atop the OVC standings.
Eastern Illinois is next on the docket, as the Panthers come to Cutchin Field on Thursday, October 19 at 3 p.m.
