For the second time in his career, Mike White has been named a weekly Davey O’Brien Great 8 performer, it was announced Monday. White previously earned the recognition after Week 1 of 2016, in his WKU debut vs. Rice. Prior to the 2017 season, he was listed among 29 other Davey O’Brien Award Watch List candidates.
By going 24-for-34 for 304 yards and five touchdowns through the air in a 35-31 victory at Old Dominion on Friday night, the senior became only the third quarterback in FBS this season with five passing scores in back-to-back games. With the Hilltoppers trailing 31-21 entering the fourth quarter, White went 7-for-8 in the final frame with 78 yards and two touchdowns to lead the visitors to a four-point victory.
White tied a career high with those five passing touchdowns for the second straight week, with the five scores going to five different receivers for the second straight week, as well. His back-to-back games with five passing touchdowns are the only two such games for a Conference USA quarterback this season.
Over the past two weeks, the Pembroke Pines, Florida, native is a combined 57-for-81 for 702 yards with 10 touchdowns. For the season, White ranks fifth in the nation with 26 completions per game, while standing 12th in the country with a 67.2 completion percentage.
The other seven quarterbacks recognized on the weekly list were: Anthony Brown (Boston College), Justice Hanses (Arkansas State), Lamar Jackson (Louisville), Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma), Trace McSorley (Penn State), Malik Rosier (Miami) and Logan Woodside (Toledo).
