The fifth-ranked Thomas More College women’s basketball used a big second quarter to defeat Waynesburg University, 89-63, tonight (Wednesday, January 10, 2017) in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) game at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania.

With the win, the Saints improve to 13-1 overall and remains undefeated in the PAC at 7-0. With the loss, the Yellow Jackets fall to 9-5 overall and 5-2 in the PAC.

Waynesburg jumped out to an early 9-4 lead when Rachel Eng made a lay-up with 8:09 to play in the opening quarter. The Saints answered with a 5-0 run to tie the game at 9-9 with 6:50 to play in the first quarter when junior guard Madison Temple (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) converted an old fashion three-point play. The Yellow Jackets took a 16-13 lead when Andrea Orlosky made a three-pointer to finish at 7-4 with 2:14 to play in the first quarter. Thomas More cut the deficit to 16-15 with 27-seconds to play in the opening quarter when first-year guard Hayden White (Milford, Ohio/Milford) made a lay-up.

Thomas More opened the second quarter on a 10-4 run to take a 25-20 lead when senior guard Abby Owings (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) made a three-pointer with 7:24 to play in the quarter. Addy Knetzer made a lay-up with 6:48 to play in the second quarter to cut the Saints’ lead to 25-22, but the Saints closed out the quarter on an 18-0 run to take a 43-22 lead at halftime when sophomore guard Taylor Jolly (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) made two free-throws with 30-seconds to play in the quarter.

The Saints out-scored Waynesburg 24-23 in the third quarter to extend the lead to 67-45 after three quarters and 22-18 in the fourth quarter to register the 89-63 victory. In the game, Thomas More had a 50-32 advantage in the paint, 29-5 off turnovers and 16-6 in second chance points. The Saints’ defense forced Waynesburg to commit 22 turnovers.

Owings led five Saints in double-figure scoring with a game-high 22 points. Joining her in double-figures was Temple and senior forward Nikki Kiernan (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) with 16 points each, sophomore forward Emily Schultz (Melbourne, Ky./Bishop Brossart) with 12 points and Jolly with 10 points each. Schultz led the team on the boards with nine and Kiernan led the team in blocks with five. Owings led the team in steals with seven and Temple led the team in assists with eight.

Thomas More remains on the road on Saturday (January 13) as it travels to Washington, Pennsylvania to play fellow PAC unbeaten Washington & Jefferson College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Henry Memorial Center.
