The red-hot Eastern Kentucky University softball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Southeast Missouri on Sunday at Gertrude Hood Field, beating the Redhawks by scores of 5-4 and 3-0.

With the wins, EKU (29-14) remains atop the OVC standings with an 11-1 conference record.

Eastern fell behind, 3-0, in game one; however, the Colonel bats finally came alive in the fifth inning. With one out in that inning, Destinee Lizzmore and Paige Murphy connected on back-to-back solo home runs to cut the deficit to one.

Johnkyria Alston followed that up with a double down the left field line. After Hannah Clark drew a walk, Zoe Mihalics singled through the left side to load the bases for Emily Corbitt. Corbitt delivered with a two-run single up the middle to give EKU a 4-3 lead.

Southeast Missouri (27-18, 11-7 OVC) knotted it up in the top of the sixth when Sarah Messex scored on a wild pitch.

Corbitt, however, delivered again in the bottom of the seventh, lifting a one-out, walk-off sacrifice fly to right center to score Murphy and give the Colonels a come-from-behind 5-4 win.

Murphy finished game one 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Alston went 2-for-2 with a run scored.

Murphy McRoberts (9-4) earned the win in game one, pitching 4.1 innings of relief and allowing the Colonels to stage their rally by limiting the Redhawks to one run on only three hits.

Mollie Paulick (12-5) dominated game two from the circle, pitching a complete game shutout while scattering only four hits.

The game was a pitchers’ duel between Paulick and Madeline Krumrey until the fourth inning when EKU finally broke through. Alston scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by Mihalicz, and then Corbitt blasted a mammoth two-run home run off the roof of the Colonels’ hitting facility to make it 3-0.

That was all Paulick needed, as the sophomore cruised the rest of the way to finish off the sweep.

EKU returns to action on Tuesday when the Colonels host Dayton at Gertrude Hood Field at 3 p.m.
