EKU WSC Strike Early, Hang on to Beat Kentucky

0

Eastern Kentucky’s Kylie Thompson scored her first goal of the season in the fourth minute and the Colonels hung on defensively for a 1-0 shutout win over Kentucky on Sunday afternoon at the Bell Soccer Complex.

Thompson was fed a ball through the schemes of the Kentucky defense after a back-line giveaway and tucked it past Hannah Leonard for her first strike of the season. Sunday marks the first time that EKU has beaten Kentucky in seven tries.

Kentucky will return to action on Friday afternoon as it faces Indiana in Bloomington at 5 p.m. ET.

UK’s best scoring chance came in the 68th minute when Abby Steiner got past the EKU defense, but goalkeeper Zoe Aguirre came out and made one of her six saves of the match. The Colonels defense also kept UK from equalizing off a corner when Payton Atkins’ header just hit the top of the crossbar and was cleared out.

The Wildcats had 12 corner kicks in the match and had 16 shots with seven of those recorded on goal.
