Following a win at the season-opening Queen City Invitational on Saturday, Eastern Kentucky University senior Gladys Cheruiyot has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Female Cross Country Runner of the Week.

Cheruiyot defeated a field of 149 runners at Northern Kentucky’s Valhalla Cross Course on Saturday morning, clocking a winning 5K time of 17:45.0.

Her performance led the EKU women’s team to a second place finish out of 12 teams. The Colonels lost only to Ohio State.

This is the first career OVC Female Cross Country Runner of the Week award for Cheruiyot. The native of Eldoret, Kenya was a key member of the 2017 team that advanced for the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history.

Cheruiyot won silver in the 10,000 meters at the OVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships back in May.

The EKU cross country teams have this weekend off before competing at the Winthrop Adidas Invitational on Saturday, September 15, in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
