Northern Kentucky’s women’s tennis junior Margita Sunjic is off to Malibu, California, to compete in the prestigious Oracle ITA Masters. Sunjic is one of 32 collegiate women’s tennis players who was invited to compete in the event, which will be held September 20-23 at the Malibu Racquet Club and Pepperdine University.

Sunjic was named the Horizon League Player of the Year for the second time in her career last season, carrying over the success from her freshman campaign when she was just the fourth player in league history to be named both the Horizon League Freshman and Player of the Year. She is also just the third Horizon League athlete to repeat honors, joining UIC’s Nicole Derouin (2002-04) and Mariya Kovaleva (2009-12). Sunjic’s record mirrored her rookie campaign, going 8-1 in the top flight of NKU’s singles lineup in Horizon League Action, with seven of the wins coming in straight sets. She also went 2-1 with Maria Koo in doubles action, but the pair led in many of the sets that were abandoned at the time that the doubles point was clinched.

Sunjic’s day will start at 8 a.m. PT at Pepperdine with mixed doubles. She will team up with the Horizon League’s male qualifier, Nico Mostardi of Cleveland State, who was named the league’s player of the year on the men’s side. The pair takes on the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Mitch Harper of Virginia Tech and Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami. Following the mixed doubles match, Sunjic will move onto the women’s singles bracket. She earned the No. 28 seed in the tournament and will open up against UCLA’s Elysia Bolton, who is seeded fifth in the tournament bracket and is the No. 3 freshman in the nation according to ITA rankings. Their match is slated for 10 a.m. at the Malibu Racquet Club.

The singles champion will earn automatic entry into the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which will be held Nov. 7-11 in Surprise, Arizona.
