After posting consecutive clean sheets for the Racers, junior Karsyn Hasch and senior Alex Steigerwald of the Murray State soccer team have been named Ohio Valley Conference Players of the Week as announced from the league office in Brentwood, Tennessee. Voting was conducted by the OVC member sports information directors.
As the Racers hosted a pair of home games at Cutchin Field for the first time in a month, the duo of Hasch and Steigerwald helped defend home turf in back-to-back shutout victories over OVC opponents Tennessee Tech and Jacksonville State.
Hasch, from Temecula, California, registered a shot on goal against the Gamecocks, but it was her defensive tenacity during her 157 minutes of action for the Racers that helped MSU secure two victories. As a member of the Murray State back line, she helped limited opponents to just nine shots on goal for the week. She shares OVC Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors with Kaci Mitchell of UT Martin.
After posting two clean sheets for the week, Steigerwald picked up her fourth shutout of the season and 25th of her career to secure OVC Goalkeeper of the Week honors. She is now tied for first on Murray State’s all-time shutout list. The senior goalkeeper from West Chester, Ohio, also made nine saves over the two matches and earned her 55th career start in goal, which is four short of Tara Isbell’s record of 59 starts.
The Racers return to action Friday (Oct. 5) as they head to Martin, Tennessee, to square off against OVC foe UT Martin at Skyhawk Field. —
