UK Softball Overpowers Rett Syndrome, Beats Tennessee

The Kentucky softball team had a special day on Sunday afternoon, hosting a game to overpower Rett Syndrome in conjunction with the Tennessee Lady Volunteers at John Cropp Stadium in Lexington.

A phenomenal crowd turned up at JCS, packing the stadium to watch not only some of the best softball in the country, but also enjoy a free carnival, slides, maize course, face painting and more. Kentucky won the game 10-5.

What is Rett Syndrome?

Rett syndrome (RTT) is most often misdiagnosed as autism, cerebral palsy, or non-specific developmental delay.  There is a simple blood test to confirm the presence of the MECP2 mutation; however, since we know that the MECP2 mutation is also seen in other disorders, the presence of the MECP2 mutation in itself is not enough for the diagnosis of Rett syndrome.  Diagnosis requires either the presence of the mutation (a molecular diagnosis) or fulfillment of the diagnostic criteria (a clinical diagnosis, based on observed signs and symptoms) or both.  Below is a list of labs to share with your ordering physician that can do the MECP2 sequencing + deletion analysis, and the list of diagnostic criteria. – RettSyndrome.com

Tennessee got on the board in the top of the second inning with a Savannah Huffstelter two-run single.

In the bottom of the second, Kentucky did a majority of its damage, striking for seven runs on four hits. Autumn Humes, Kelsee Henson and Katie Reed all had three-consecutive RBI hits before a three-run home run from sophomore Lauren Johnson put the exclamation mark on the inning. A Katie Reed single in the bottom of the third increased the UK lead to 8-2 through three.

After Tennessee scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning, Katie Reed hit a two-run home run to left field to score herself and Mallory Peyton to put the Wildcats up 10-5 – where the scoreline stayed for the finality of the game.

Kentucky has one more week of fall games left, traveling to Louisville to take on the Cardinals and Western Kentucky on Saturday before a fall finale at Tennessee on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET. The game at Tennessee will be the second half of the Overpower Rett games, with Tennessee hosting the second leg at Lee Stadium in Knoxville.
