The University of Louisville women’s soccer team fell 1-0  to Virginia Tech in the regular season finale on Thursday night at Lynn stadium.  Louisville falls to 12-5 on the season and 6-4 in ACC play.  Virginia Tech improves to 9-6-3 and 5-5 in ACC play to earn the final spot in the ACC Tournament.

Louisville held possession for most of the first half, Emina Ekic had the first shot of the match in the fifth minute but the Hokie’s keeper made the save.   The Cardinals had back-to-back corner kicks in the 29thminute. Of the two chances, Louisville came close to scoring when Allison Whitfield’s kick found the head of Gabby Vincent, but her header sailed wide of the goal.

In the 35th minute Virginia Tech earned their first corner kick of the match.   Jordan Hemmen corralled the corner and sent a shot past Gabby Kouzelos to give the Hokies a 1-0 lead going into the break.

Despite the goal, Louisville’s defense still had a strong showing through the first half, keeping the Hokies to just one shot.

Louisville opened the second half with a scoring chance in the 52nd minute when Ekic launched a free kick that went just wide of the left post.

The Cardinals saw one last chance to tie with 10 minutes to go in regulation when Allison Whitfield broke away from her defender to get one-on-one with the Virginia Tech goalkeeper. Being to the left of the goal, she sent a cross to the right side that was unable to find another Cardinal to complete the play.

Louisville was able to keep Virginia Tech scoreless in the second half, allowing them just two shots. The Cardinals finished the match with an 8-3 advantage in shots and 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. 

Louisville will be back in action as they travel to No. 11 Virginia for the quarterfinal round of the ACC Tournament.  The Cardinals earned the sixth seed in the tournament after finishing tied for fifth with Clemson.  Clemson won the tie break to earn the fifth seed.  Louisville and Virginia met earlier in the season with the Cavaliers winning 1-0 at Lynn Stadium.
