UK Football’s Benny Snell Jr. Named to Maxwell Award Semifinalist

University of Kentucky junior running back Benny Snell Jr. is one of 20 semifinalists for the 82nd annual Maxwell Award, given to the Collegiate Player of the Year by the Maxwell Football Club.

Snell Jr., (Westerville, Ohio) has rushed for 935 yards and nine touchdowns this season, leading the Southeastern Conference and ranking 10th in the nation with 116.9 yards per game. He also leads the SEC in all-purpose yardage (126.2 yards per game) and tied for fourth in total touchdowns.

Snell was chosen a second-team Mid-Season All-American by The Associated Press and The Athletic. He has helped lead Kentucky to a 7-1 record and the Wildcats are tied atop the SEC Eastern Division with a 5-1 league mark.

Although only a junior, Snell is second in school history in career rushing with 3,359 yards and he holds the UK career marks for rushing touchdowns (41) and total touchdowns (41). He is 65 yards away from becoming the first player in school history with three 1,000-yard rushing seasons.

Three finalists for the Maxwell Award will be unveiled Nov. 19. The winner will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 6. The formal presentation of the award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Tropicana Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on March 8, 2019.

The award is named in honor Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell, whose contributions to the game of football were extensive, including time as a player, a sportswriter and an official.
