The highest Ohio Valley Conference individual academic/athletic honor was awarded to Eastern Kentucky University senior volleyball student-athlete Chloe Rojas, the league announced today from its Brentwood, Tennessee headquarters.
Rojas is one of six individuals to receive the prestigious OVC Scholar-Athlete Award for 2017-18. The St. Charles, Illinois native has a 4.0 grade-point-average while majoring in journalism and Spanish.
The award is the highest individual honor that OVC student-athletes can earn, and is given annually to three men and three women student-athletes of junior or senior status for their accomplishments in both the classroom and athletic arena, and because of their leadership qualities.
The winners were selected from a group of nominees submitted by OVC Faculty Athletics Representatives. To be eligible, honorees must have at least a 3.25 GPA and conduct themselves in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, his or her institution, intercollegiate athletics and the Ohio Valley Conference. The award is based on academic and athletic criteria/accomplishments achieved during the 2017-18 school year.
In addition to her perfect grade-point-average, Rojas’ other academic accomplishments include: Dean’s List and President’s Award every semester during the past three years, OVC Medal of Honor (2016, 2017, 2018 – given annually to the student-athletes that achieve the highest GPA in a conference-sponsored sport), OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll (2016, 2017, 2018) and CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team (2017).
Rojas is regularly involved in campus and community activities. She served as president of the EKU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for the 2017-18 academic year, she is a member of the EKU Honors Program and is a peer mentor for freshmen in the program, she is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) leadership team, a member of the Campus Outreach leadership team, a Spanish tutor for the Bilingual Activities program at the Richmond public library and a member of the worship team for Campus Outreach.
On the court, Rojas is as accomplished as she is off the court. She was chosen as the 2017 OVC Defensive Player of the Year and picked to the All-OVC first team, she was chosen to the Cactus All-Tournament Team in 2017 and the Rebel Challenge All-Tournament Team in 2018, and Rojas has been chosen as the conference’s defensive player of the week on three occasions during her career.
This year, the defensive specialist has played in all 87 sets and leads the team with 385 digs, an average of 4.43 per set. She ranks fifth in the conference in digs.
Rojas is the first EKU female student-athlete chosen as an OVC Scholar Athlete since Ann Eason in 2015.
