Kentucky State University baseball coach Rob Henry became the program all-time wins leader as the Thorobreds swept a non-conference doubleheader from Alice Lloyd Wednesday at Alumni Park.

“Our offense was the big story today with eight home runs between the two games,” said Kentucky State University head coach Rob Henry. “Besides that, we also did some other things well. Our defense only made two errors on the day, and we had some pitchers get extended work after nearly two weeks off because of weather.

“We also had some young guys get some playing time, and it was good to see our offense keep answering back whenever Alice Lloyd fought their way back into the second game. It’s a good sign that we’re learning to win in a lot of different ways.”

GAME ONE: KENTUCKY STATE 11, ALICE LLOYD 5
Kentucky State scored in each of the first four innings, including a five-run third, to open up an 11-1 lead and breezed to the 11-5 victory.

Freshman Josh Graves (Springfield, KY) opened the scoring with an RBI groundout in the first, and then junior Chase Egnor (Shepherdsville, KY) extended the lead with a two-run bomb in the second.

A three-run homer by sophomore Adren Thomspon (Lexington, KY) and a two-run triple by senior Cameron Starks (Alpharetta, GA) gave the Thorobreds the 8-1 lead after three.

Junior Jordan Ransom (Ringgold, GA) connected on his second long ball of the season, a solo shot in the fourth, and Thompson capped the KSU scoring with a two-run shot in the fifth.

Ransom was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a home run, while four players finished with two hits each. Starks finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while senior Jay Poullard (Louisville, KY) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Freshman Aram Kumar (Georgetown, KY) finished 2-for-2 and Thompson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two home runs and five RBI.

Junior Brady Bibbs, 2-0, (Hornersville, MO) allowed four earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts and six walks.

GAME TWO: KENTUCKY STATE 20, ALICE LLOYD 10
On the strength of a nine-run first inning, the Thorobreds completed the sweep and gave Henry the record-sealing victory, in a slugfest. Kentucky State finished with 10 extra-base hits, six doubles and four homers.

KSU sent 13 batters to the plate, and led 3-0, thanks for a three-run long ball from Starks before an out was recorded. Every starter recorded at least one hit, and four players finished with three hits.

Sophomore Dom Lawson (Bloomfield, KY) went yard twice, finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and five RBI. Senior Russell Sims (Harrodsburg, KY) was 3-for-4 with four runs scored, a double, stolen base and four RBI, while Starks was 3-for-5 on two doubles, a home run, three runs scored and three RBI.

Ransom had another three-hit game, scoring three runs and drive in another. Poullard and Thompson added two hits, and freshman Dakota Dull (Owensboro, KY) connected on his first career home run.

Freshman Solomon Reed, 1-0, (Cincinnati, OH) earned the victory in relief, allowing two runs – one earned – on two hits in 2 1/3 innings. He walked five and had two wild pitches. Sophomore De’Nayus Johnson (Detroit, MI) started and went 3 2/3 innings. He surrendered eight runs, six earned, on six hits with four strikeouts and four walks.

Kentucky State (8-1-1) starts a four-game series with a doubleheader Saturday against Salem University.
