Kentucky State University baseball and head coach Rob Henry announced the addition of seven new players for the upcoming 2016-2017 season on Thursday. The seven newcomers will join twenty returning players to make up the 2016-2017 ball club.
“I’m excited about the promise of this year’s recruiting class,” said Henry. “We were able to get out and fill some specific needs with players who will come in and contribute this season, along with adding depth in replacing our departing senior class. We graduated some excellent players, and I fully expect these new players to come in and build on what last year’s seniors built here.”
Greg Alexander; 6’1″ 210; Catcher, South Suburban College (IL)
Alexander comes to KSU as a transfer from a strong junior college program at South Suburban. He showed power last year which should help KSU in the middle of the lineup, and he will step in and be one of the more vocal leaders on and off the field. He will provide the Thorobreds a great tandem with last year’s returning starter, Bryan Wilson, which will enable both of them to remain strong throughout the year.
Cameron Hughes; 5’8″ 165; LHP/OF, Dalton State CC (Georgia)
Hughes transferred to KSU from Dalton State, where he sat out as a freshman, bringing four years of eligibility to KSU. Coach Henry expects Cameron to make impacts “on the mound as either a starter or quality reliever while competing for a spot in the outfield”. His ability to throw quality strikes from the left side and swing the bat effectively gives him a chance to see the field at the start of the season.
Conner Kelley; 6’0″ 170; LHP/OF Union College (KY)
Kelly comes to Frankfort after sitting out last season at Union College. He is originally from Frankfort, and KSU is happy to welcome him back home with an opportunity to fight for quality innings early on from the mound. He brings a solid physical frame and is anticipated to get stronger throughout his career at KSU, which in turn will improve his ability to develop as a two-way player for the Thorobreds.
Matthew Oxford; 6’2″ 160; SS/RHP Hixson HS (TN)
Oxford joins the Thorobreds as a true freshman who will provide depth on the infield as a true shortstop who can play multiple positions, as well as a quality reliever coming out of the pen. Oxford has a love for the game that is infectious, and he makes his teammates around him better. He’s long and rangy with a good glove and good arm and has the potential to push last year’s starter, Justin Stinson, for the starting spot at shortstop.
Vashawn Phillips; 5’11” 210; OF North College Hill HS (OH)
Phillips is another true freshman who brings good size and athleticism that needs refinement. He shows flashes of true potential that will become more consistent with time. Phillips works hard in the weight room and on the field, and will soon see his work paying off as he competes more for playing time with last year’s returning outfielders.
Nick Stifel; 5’10” 170; MIF North College Hill HS (OH)
Stifel is the second of three freshmen from Cincinnati coming to KSU. He is also a member of the Mighty Marching Thorobreds, so he has a unique situation at KSU. Nick is a good athlete who will compete for playing time in the middle infield as he develops into a quality player.
Andrew Steele; 5’7″ 150; MIF North College Hill HS (OH)
Steele also hails from Cincinnati as a member of the baseball team and the Mighty Marching Thorobreds. Andrew primarily plays second base and will help provide depth in the middle infield as he learns how to compete at the college level.
Ricky West; 5’10” 225; RHP/OF Olney Central CC (IL)
West comes to Frankfort from Olney Central, where he sat out last season as a freshman. He brings a true upper-80’s power arm that has the potential to improve, along with an excellent breaking ball. He’s a good teammate who knows how to make the people around him better. He also has some power at the plate, and he will get a look offensively as well. West is expected to compete for a spot in the starting rotation and possibly help out with depth at designated hitter.
