Eastern Kentucky University’s Kyle Nowlin was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 21st round of the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft on Saturday. Nowlin was the 622nd overall pick in the draft.
The senior was the 22nd overall pick by the Athletics. He was the fourth outfielder chosen by Oakland.
Nowlin hit .300 this season with 21 home runs, 61 RBIs and 50 walks. He set new program records for home runs and walks in a season, and at the end of the regular season, led NCAA Division I baseball in home runs.
The Harrison, Ohio native was drafted last year in the 30th round by the Philadelphia Phillies but chose to return to EKU.
Nowlin is the 34th Major League Baseball Draft selection in EKU history. Teammate Mandy Alvarez became the 33rd Eastern Kentucky draft selection earlier in the day when he was chosen by the New York Yankees in the 17th round.
Eleven former Colonels have played in Major League Baseball, including current San Diego Padres left-handed pitcher Christian Friedrich (3-1, 2.57 ERA).
The Athletics have three rookie league teams, two in the Dominican Summer League and one in the Arizona League. Oakland’s short season team is located in Burlington, Vermont.
