The Kentucky baseball team placed three players on the coveted Baseball America All-America teams, it was announced Thursday.
First baseman Evan White earned Second-Team honors, while outfielder Tristan Pompey and second baseman Riley Mahan picked up Third-Team recognition by the longtime publication.
White, who missed 13 games early in the season due to injury, still ranked among the Southeastern Conference leaders in batting average, doubles, hits and total bases. The Gahanna, Ohio native, is hitting .368 in 51 games with 75 hits, 47 runs, a team-high 24 doubles, a triple, nine home runs, 40 RBI and five stolen bases. The 24 doubles are the second most in a single-season in UK history and he currently ranks seventh on the school’s all-time career hits list with 229 and sixth in career batting average (.354).
Mahan, a junior from Cincinnati, Ohio, quietly produced a phenomenal season in SEC play, ranking in the top three in runs (2nd), doubles (3rd), triples (1st), home runs (1st) and slugging percentage (2nd) during the regular season. He joined Mississippi State’s Brent Rooker, as the only players to win SEC Player of the Week three times this season. Mahan is hitting .339 with 56 runs, 86 hits, 22 doubles, three triples, nine steals and has a team-high 15 home runs and 67 RBI.
Pompey, who hails from Toronto, Ontario, led the conference with a .410 batting average in league games, while also tallying the most hits and finishing in the top three in runs, on base percentage and total bases. He ranks third on UK’s single-season hits list with 95 this year, third in runs with 70 and sixth in walks with 45. He’s hitting .368 with 28 extra-base hits and nine steals.
