Eastern Kentucky University’s baseball team battled Morehead State University before falling just short in a 5-2 loss at the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament on Saturday at Choccolocco Park.

EKU was among the final three teams remaining in the OVC Tournament. The Colonels finish the season 30-31 overall.

Morehead State scored first on Niko Hulsizer’s two-out, solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. Eastern Kentucky came right back and tied it in the top of the seventh when Logan Stephens singled to left to score Daniel McFarland with two outs in the inning. It was a looper by Stephens that broke the tie in the 14th inning of Friday’s game against Jacksonville State.

The Eagles broke the tie and pulled away in the bottom of the seventh. Tyler Niemann’s single through the right side put MSU up one. Jake Hammon followed with a three-run home run to turn it into a 5-1 game.

McFarland closed the gap by a run with an RBI single in the eighth. He finished the game 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Jack Piekos started for Eastern and spun five scoreless innings before allowing a run with two outs in the sixth. He ran the pitching staff’s streak of scoreless innings to 15 straight. The senior finished the day with one run allowed on three hits in five and two-thirds innings of work. He walked two and struck out three.

Niemann finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI for Morehead State (35-25). Hulsizer was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Eastern Kentucky began play at the OVC Tournament with a loss to No. 3 seed Morehead State on Wednesday. The Colonels knocked off No. 7 Murray State, 13-6, Wednesday night and then beat No. 5 Austin Peay, 5-1, on Thursday. EKU edged No. 4 seed Jacksonville State, 11-8, in 14 innings on Friday night to stay alive in the elimination bracket.
