Four Eastern Kentucky University football players were recently chosen to the 2019 Kentucky All-Commonwealth Team presented by the Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame. Those four are Ben Bascom, Daryl McCleskey Jr., Leodis Moore III and Aaron Patrick.
The Kentucky Collegiate All-Commonwealth Team is a pre-season recognition award for football players attending a Kentucky college or university. The All-Commonwealth Team designation/award honors select players whose leadership on the field and in the classroom has demonstrated the potential leadership needed to carry that success into the game of life. These nominated players represent some of the most outstanding athletes in the Commonwealth.
Bascom is a redshirt senior defensive back from Apoka, Florida. He earned third team All-Ohio Valley Conference recognition last season by Phil Steele after starting all 11 games at safety. He was third on the team with 66 tackles, including four tackles for a loss, had two interceptions, totaled six pass break-ups and two forced fumbles.
McCleskey, a senior running back from Dayton, Ohio, was a third team All-OVC pick by Phil Steele in 2018. He was second on the team with 651 rushing yards, average of 4.5 yards per carry and scored five rushing touchdowns. McCleskey was fifth in the conference in rushing yards and fifth in rushing yards per game (59.2).
Moore is a redshirt senior defensive back from Indianapolis, Indiana. He was a first team All-OVC selection by coaches and communications directors and first team All-OVC pick by Phil Steele. Moore finished with 48 tackles, six tackles for a loss, 0.5 sacks, five interceptions, five pass break-ups, one fumble recovery and a blocked kick. He led the OVC and ranked ninth in the nation with 0.5 interceptions per game. Moore earned OVC Defensive Player of the Week honors after finishing with seven tackles, one tackle for a loss, one interception and a blocked extra-point attempt at Marshall. He was chosen as OVC Defensive Player of the Week again after he intercepted two passes and had eight tackles at Austin Peay.
Patrick, a Dayton, Ohio native, was a first team All-OVC pick by coaches and communications directors and first team All-OVC by Phil Steele. He ranked second in the OVC with 0.68 sacks per game. Patrick finished the season with 53 tackles, 12 tackles for a loss, 7.5 sacks, 15 quarterback hurries and one pass break-up.
