Kentucky State University forced five Tuskegee University turnovers, but the Golden Tigers held on to defeat the Thorobreds 26-21 on Homecoming at Alumni Stadium, Saturday afternoon.

The Thorobreds (2-6, 1-3) have now dropped four in a row, while the Golden Tigers (6-2, 4-0) have won four in a row and are atop the SIAC West standings.

TU struck late in the first frame when the Golden Tigers connected on a 74-yard touchdown pass to take the lead at 7-0.

Early in the second quarter, the KSU defense struck back when Chris Goodman picked off the TU quarterback and took it to the house for a 52-yard touchdown to even things up at 7-7.

Late in the second quarter, the Thorobreds’ provided another spark with a sack-fumble recovery by junior defensive end Jalen Dingle. Following the turnover, sophomore running back Brett Sylve sprang loose on three consecutive runs putting the Thorobreds at the one-yard line. Junior quarterback Paul Campbell finished the drive, scampering in for a one-yard touchdown run, giving the Thorobreds the lead at the half, 14-7.

TU came out firing with a quick 84-yard touchdown run, but a blocked extra point by the Thorobreds’ junior defensive end Rodriguez Jones kept the Thorobreds in the lead at 14-13 early in the third quarter.

Midway through the third quarter, KSU picked off the Golden Tigers quarterback for the third time giving the KSU offense excellent field position on their own 43. After consecutive first downs, Campbell found freshman tight end Camron Gore for a 17-yard touchdown pass and catch, giving the Thorobreds a 21-13 lead with 2:57 left in the third stanza.

Tuskegee answered quick with a 73-yard touchdown run of their own, but a failed two-point conversion kept KSU in the lead 21-19 heading into the final frame.

After the KSU drive stalled early the fourth quarter, TU answered with a five-yard run to take the lead. KSU couldn’t answer late in the game when Campbell was picked off with 1:29 left cementing the game for the Golden Tigers at 26-21.

Sylve recorded his third consecutive game of over 100 yards rushing, picking up 137 yards on 25 carries for over five yards a carry.

Junior defensive lineman Chris Roberts led all tacklers with a career-high 10 tackles, two tackles for a loss, and one hard-hitting sack. Along with Goodman’s interception, the Harrodsburg, Kentucky native added eight tackles, two tackles for a loss, and a sack.

KSU will travel to Jackson, TN next weekend for a matchup with SIAC west division foe Lane College at Lane Stadium. Kickoff will be at 3 pm ET.
