Fresh off the best tournament of her young career, Kentucky women’s golfer Anna Hack did one better this weekend with a 52nd-place finish in a difficult field at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. Hack fired a final-day 76 and finished the tournament at 14-over par to lead the Wildcats.
As a team, UK finished in 17th place with a total score of 913. Though Kentucky’s players failed to crack the individual top 50, it was the first tournament this season that all five Wildcats have shot in the 70s in all three rounds.
Fourth-ranked Alabama won the tournament with a score of 16-over par with the Crimson Tide’s Cheyenne Knight capturing the individual title at 1-over par.
This weekend’s tournament featured some of the best competition the Wildcats will face all season. Seven teams in the field were ranked in GolfStat’s top 25, including the top five teams in the country. Even so, playing at the difficult Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C., no team or individual finished the 54-hole tournament under par.
Hack, sophomore Grace Rose and junior Jordan Chael tied for the best Wildcat rounds of the day with each shooting 5-over par, though all took much different paths to get there.
Hack, a native of Paducah, Ky., carded a team-high three birdies Sunday and led UK with seven birdies on the weekend, among the tournament leaders. She was at 1-over par heading into her final three holes before a bogey and a double bogey on two of her last three holes. It’s the second straight tournament she’s shot all sub-80 rounds and the second time she’s posted her career-best finish.
Rose finished right behind Hack in a tie for 55th at 15-over par. She was once again a model of consistency on Sunday, recording 13 pars and five bogeys. Meanwhile, Chael’s 76 on Sunday was her best score of the weekend as she closed out the tournament in a tie for 74th at 19-over par.
Sophomore Isabelle Johansson, who has led the Wildcats in scoring average all season long, couldn’t find her normal groove on Sunday and recorded one of the rare rounds of the year where she failed to make a birdie. She finished in a tie for 62nd at 16-over par.
Senior Cylia Damerau, coming of a career-best fourth-place finish at the UCF Challenge, tied Johansson on Sunday at 7-over par for a 54-hole total of 18-over par and a 70th-place finish.
Located on the banks of one of South Carolina’s most beautiful islands, Long Cove was designed by Pete Dye, one of the century’s greatest golf course architects. The course has consistently been rated among the top golf courses in the country. Most recently, in 2014, it was ranked No. 15 in the Top 100 Residential Golf Courses in the U.S. by Golfweek Magazine. This week it played as a par 71 at 6,208 yards.
UK will take a two-week break before the LSU Tiger Classic in Baton Rouge, La. That three-day tournament will be March 20-22.
As always, fans can follow the team on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, as well as on the web at UKathletics.com, for the latest Kentucky women’s golf information.
