Eastern Kentucky University’s women’s golf team won the 2019 Colonel Classic by 13 shots over Northern Illinois University on Saturday at the University Club at Arlington.  Senior Elsa Moberly captured the individual title with a 4-shot victory. 

It’s Eastern’s fourth win in the event in the last six years and sixth Colonel Classic championship in the event’s 26-year history.

The victory was also the first of the season for first-year head coach Mandy Moore.

EKU began the day with a four-shot advantage over Northern Illinois.  A final round 291 gave the Colonels a 54-hole total of 875.  Oakland (904) finished third, 16 shots behind NIU (888).  Dayton (916) was fourth and IUPUI (917) rounded out the top-5.

Moberly started the final round on Saturday tied for second, but just one shot out of first place.  The Somerset, Kentucky native shot a final round 1-under 71 for a three-round total of 212 (-4).  She beat a group of four players tied for second – Josephine Chang (216) from the University of Kentucky, Ellie Cronin (216) of Dayton, Ragnhildur Kristinsdottir (216) from EKU and Nicole Smiley (216) of Ohio – by four shots.

The 13-teams competed on the par 72, 5,885-yard course at the University Club at Arlington.

Kristinsdottir followed Friday’s round one and two scores of 73 and 70 with a final round 73 on Saturday.  She finished at even-par with a total of 216.

Hannabeth Owens carded a final round 73 for a three-round total of 222 (+6) and tied for 11th in a field of 81 players.  Amanda Lindahl (225) tied for 15th.  Samantha Sandland (244) tied for 69th.

Playing as individuals, Bailey Hubbard (228) tied for 20th overall and Mikayla Groonwald (232) tied for 30th

Eastern will conclude the regular season at the Murray State Jan Weaver Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Miller Memorial Golf Course.
