Eastern Kentucky University’s women’s golf team staged a third round rally to win the Jan Weaver Invitational hosted by Murray State University on Saturday. EKU senior Elsa Moberly captured the individual title by five shots over MSU’s Anna Moore.
EKU had a three-round total of 884, three shots better than second place Rutgers (887). The Colonels beat preseason Ohio Valley Conference favorite Murray State by eight shots on the Racers’ home course. MSU (892) began the final round in first but finished third.
EKU opened the event with a first round 294 on Friday and was in third place, nine shots behind Murray State. A second round 293 on Friday afternoon helped the Colonels move to second, just two shots behind the Racers. Eastern moved in front of the field with a final round 297 while Murray State shot a 307 on Saturday.
The field also included OVC teams Tennessee Tech (8th), Belmont (9th), Austin Peay (12th) and Tennessee State (14th).
The 15-teams competed on the par 72 Francis E. Miller Memorial Golf Course.
Moberly shot rounds of 2-under 70, 4-under 68 and 1-over 73 for a total of 211 (-5).
Hannabeth Owens tied for sixth overall with a three round total of 219 (+3). After rounds of 71 and 76 on Friday, she finished play with an even-par 72 on Saturday.
Ragnhildur Kristinsdottir (225) tied for 11th. Freshman Bailey Hubbard (232) tied for 35th.
The Colonels will play in the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Championship on April 15-17 at The Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
