Eastern Kentucky University’s men’s golf team blistered the course to the tune of 7-under on Tuesday to conclude the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in second place.
All five Colonels shot under par for the tournament, combining for a two-round total of 555 (-13) in Mike Whitson’s first tournament as head coach of the men’s team. Whitson led the EKU women’s team to three Ohio Valley Conference Championships in eight years as head coach.
Junior Billy Basham led Eastern and finished second overall. He opened play on Monday with a round of 69 (-2) and was tied for 15th. He shot up the leaderboard with a final round 4-under 67 on Tuesday, giving him a 36-hole total of 136. He finished two shots behind individual medalist Zac Owens (134) of Wichita State.
Wichita State (549) edged Eastern Kentucky by six shots for the tournament title. EKU was five shots better than Dayton (560) and Davidson (560) in third place. Virginia Commonwealth (563) was fifth.
“I’m very proud of this group this week,” Whitson said. “They have been working hard and have been excited for the season to start and it showed. Billy was really good this week. His preparation for the fall at practice has been impressive and it will continue to pay off for him.”
Junior Tyler Lippert (-3) tied for 12th after rounds of 69 and 70 for a total of 139.
The trio of Willis Gaer, Austin Bagshaw and Erik Lindwall concluded play with identical totals of 141 (-1) and tied for 21st.
The 15-team event was contested at the par-71, 6,573-yard Guyan Golf and Country Club.
The Colonels will be back in action on Saturday when they host the EKU Intercollegiate sponsored by Raising Cane’s at the University Club at Arlington.
