Samantha Sandland posted a career-best second place finish and the Eastern Kentucky University’s women’s golf team opened its 2019-20 season by placing fourth at the Redbird Invitational, hosted by Illinois State University, on Sunday and Monday.
Sandland shot rounds of 71, 75 and 70 for a 54-hole total of 216 (E). Her third round score of 70 tied her career low. Her previous best finish was fifth with what was previously a career-low total of 218 at the 2017 Ohio Valley Conference Championship. The Phoenix, Arizona native finished just one shot behind individual medalist Caroline Klemp (215) of Northern Illinois.
As a team, the Colonels followed rounds of 294 and 298 on Sunday with a final round 300 on Monday. Eastern’s three-round total of 892 was just seven shots behind team champion Xavier (885). Bradley (888) was second and Ball State (891) placed third, just one shot in front of EKU.
Eastern Kentucky beat such teams as Northern Illinois (6th), Southern Illinois (7th), host Illinois State (8th), Akron (11th), and Ohio (17th).
Mikayla Groonwald (224) tied for 15th overall with a total of 224. Bailey Hubbard (225) was one shot back and tied for 20th. Newcomers Elisa Orduna Shackleton (231) and Vilma Efraimsson (235) tied for 48th and 60th respectively.
Playing as an individual, freshman Maddie Hensley (246) placed 90th.
The 17-team event was contested at the par 72, 6,010-yard Weibring Golf Club.
The Colonels return to the course next Monday and Tuesday at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tennessee.
