On the heels of winning his fourth career title in a playoff, WKU Hilltopper Golf’s Billy Tom Sargent has been named Conference USA Men’s Co-Golfer of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.
This is the fourth career weekly award and the first of the season for Sargent, who last claimed the honor after winning Houston’s Border Olympics in March.
Sargent was in seventh place entering the final round this week at Kennesaw State’s Pinetree Intercollegiate, but made a huge push late with a 7-under 65 over the final 18 holes – a round that included seven birdies, an eagle and two bogeys.
He went to a playoff with Wisconsin’s No. 1 golfer for the individual championship, and things almost looked grim from the start when his tee shot nearly went out of bounds. The Georgetown, Ky., native was able to salvage par, which was good enough to claim the crown.
Sargent’s four career wins are tied for the second-most by a Hilltopper since 1980, and they’re the most since Brent Long won five tournaments from 2005-08. He’s won at least one tournament each of the last three seasons.
Sargent’s 65 is tied for the fourth-best round by a WKU men’s golfer since 1980.
As a team, WKU finished third – six strokes behind champion Wisconsin and one shot behind the host, 50th-ranked Kennesaw State.
The event concluded the Hilltoppers’ fall season. They return to the course at South Alabama’s Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate on Feb. 11-12 in Mobile, Ala.
