In a field that included six teams ranked in the top-35 in the nation at the end of last season, and 10 teams rated among the top-65, Eastern Kentucky University’s Elsa Moberly tied for fifth and broke two school records at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship hosted by the University of Tennessee.

 

All 15 teams included in the field were ranked among the top-100 in the nation at the end of last season.  EKU finished 13th overall, beating No. 55 Missouri and No. 77 Coastal Carolina.

 

Moberly shot two rounds under par against the loaded field.  She opened play on Monday with a 4-under round of 67 in the first round, tying her own school record for lowest single round.  Moberly then shot a 2-over duringMonday’s second round.  The junior from Somerset, Kentucky closed out play on Tuesday with a 2-under 69.  Her 54-hole total of 209 broke her own school record of 211 set last season.

 

Moberly tied with Brigitte Dunne of Southern Methodist and was just one shot behind fourth place Bing Singhsumalee of Illinois.  Emilia Migliaccio from Wake Forest captured individual medalist honors with a three-round total of 204.

 

The 36-hole event was contested at the par-71, 5,840-yard Cherokee Country Club.

 

The Colonels shot rounds of 298, 303 and 290 for a 54-hole total of 891.  Eastern finished two shots in front of 14th place Coastal Carolina and eight shots better than 15th-place Missouri from the Southeastern Conference.

 

Illinois (840) captured the team title by one shot over Kent State (841).  Tennessee (860) was third.

 

Kent State (No. 14), North Carolina State (No. 26), Wake Forest (No. 29), Tennessee (No. 30), Brigham Young (No. 32) and Illinois (No. 33) finished the 2016-17 season ranked among the top-35 teams in the country.

 

Amanda Lindahl (223) tied for 50th overall for Eastern Kentucky.  Hannabeth Owens (226) tied for 62nd.  Both shot strong final rounds with a 1-over and a 2-over respectively.

 

The Colonels will return to action on Sept. 18-19 at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship hosted by the University of Tennessee.
