Mary Joiner and WKU Lady Topper Golf are both back in the championship chase.
Joiner, a sophomore, leads the individual standings with round to go at Eastern Kentucky’s Colonel Classic, while the Lady Toppers sit atop the team leaderboard by one stroke heading into Saturday’s final round.
Joiner took control in Friday’s opening round with a 2-under 70 at the par-72, 5,815-yard University Club at Arlington. The Franklin, Ky., native had a steady day with three birdies, one bogey and 14 pars. She’s two strokes ahead of Tennessee Tech’s Hollee Sadler and Oakland’s Alexis Jones.
Joiner will vie for her fourth career individual title and second this season in Saturday’s final round. Her three titles in her first two college seasons are already a program record.
Teams were originally scheduled to play two rounds Friday and the final round Saturday, but rainy conditions at the course changed the format to one round each day.
As a team, the Lady Toppers fired a 9-over 297 in the first round and lead second-place Akron by one stroke. Only five shots separate the top five teams in the 15-team field.
Behind Joiner, WKU senior Katie Story is tied for 10th following a 2-over 74. Sophomore Bailey Tyree is tied for 22nd with a 76, while senior Georgina Blackman and freshman Megan Clarke are both tied for 29th with 77s.
Freshman Caroline Cavin and sophomore Abigail Smee each shot 79s while competing as individuals.
