In a thrilling showdown at Rupp Arena, defending Sweet 16 champion George Rogers Clark High School secured a hard-fought 60-56 victory over Lyon County High School in the second round of the 2023 Sweet 16 State Tournament. A tight contest throughout, neither team managed to hold a substantial lead, with George Rogers Clark’s largest advantage being eight points in the third quarter.

George Rogers Clark managed an impressive 46.3% shooting percentage from the field (19-41) and an even more remarkable 50% (12-24) from beyond the arc. Their free-throw shooting was also solid, converting 10 of 15 attempts (66.7%). On the other hand, Lyon County shot 47.9% (23-48) from the field and struggled from three-point range, making only 7 of 23 attempts (30.4%). They also made only 50% (3-6) of their free throws.

Rebounds were relatively even, with George Rogers Clark collecting 22 boards, while Lyon County secured 26. Both teams shared the ball well, as each recorded 15 assists. Turnovers were also nearly equal, with George Rogers Clark committing eight and Lyon County turning the ball over nine times.

For George Rogers Clark, Parrish led the team in scoring with 15 points, followed by Hampton and Edwards, each contributing 12 points. Morton played a crucial role, dishing out 10 assists and grabbing five rebounds. Maxwell added 10 points, shooting an efficient 4-6 from the field.

On Lyon County’s side, Perry was the top scorer with 19 points, although he struggled with his shooting, going 7-19 from the field and 4-13 from beyond the arc. Reddick and Shoulders both added 14 points, with Shoulders also pulling down nine rebounds and dishing out five assists. Nelson contributed seven points and secured seven rebounds.

Despite a late surge by Lyon County, George Rogers Clark managed to hold on to their lead, thanks in part to a clutch defensive effort that prevented Lyon County from scoring a field goal in the final 4:39 of the game.

George Rogers Clark now moves on to face Douglass in the semifinals.
