Bellarmine University released the 2018-19 men’s basketball schedule on Tuesday, revealing a 27-game slate with two preseason exhibitions.
Among the highlights are a six-game home nonconference schedule, a trip to Saginaw, Michigan to compete in the GLVC-GLIAC Challenge and an 18-game Great Lakes Valley Conference slate.
“I believe in playing a very difficult schedule, and this year is very challenging,” said Bellarmine Coach Scott Davenport. “I love the balance on behalf of our fans. The GLVC will again be extremely tough from top to bottom, east to west. Our players prepare to play the best!”
The Knights open the season with a two-game exhibition schedule starting with an Oct. 28 contest against the University of Louisville at the KFC Yum! Center. Exhibition number two comes at Knight Hall on Thursday, Nov. 1 with BU hosting Division III Wabash College in a 7 p.m. game.
The regular season gets under way for the Knights on Nov. 9 in the annual GLVC-GLIAC Challenge. This year, Bellarmine travels to Saginaw, Michigan to face the host Saginaw Valley State Cardinals before clashing with Northwood the following day.
Coach Davenport will go head to head against former assistant coach Drew Cooper on Nov. 14 when Bellarmine travels to Owensboro to face Kentucky Wesleyan.
The Knights’ regular season home opener comes Nov. 24 when they put their 57-game home winning streak on the line against Wayne State. Lindenwood, out of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA), visits Knights Hall on Wednesday, Nov. 28.
Next up, is Bellarmine’s only GLVC game prior to 2019, and it comes on the road at Southern Indiana on Saturday, Dec. 1.
After that down and back trip to Evansville, the Knights are home for the remainder of the calendar year starting with a Dec. 8 date with Christian Brothers.
The Bellarmine Classic will be played in Knights Hall on Dec. 18 and 19 with BU squaring off against Barry and Northern Michigan. Southern Indiana will be the fourth team in the Classic and will play the same two teams.
Bellarmine then breaks for the holidays before coming back with Martin Methodist in a home contest on Dec. 29.
Once the New Year rings in, the Knights play exclusively GLVC teams. Bellarmine will play each of the 13 teams once with “home and homes” against USI, Indianapolis, Lewis, McKendree and Illinois Springfield.
Special home dates come on Feb. 16 (homecoming against McKendree) and Feb. 23 (“Senior Day” versus Lewis).
Postseason play begins with the GLVC Championship Tournament. The 2019 edition takes place in Edwardsville, Illinois on March 7-10 on the campus of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. NCAA Regionals will be played on campus sites with the NCAA Division II Elite 8 returning to the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana on March 27-30.
