NKU WBB takes down Robert Morris in Horizon League opener, 61-33

A surge of scoring from Lindsey Duvall, including her third-straight double-double, and stingy defense gave Northern Kentucky women’s basketball a 61-33 victory over Robert Morris. The win is NKU’s first of the year, pushing it to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in Horizon League action, while RMU slides to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in league play.   

STATS LEADERS 

  • Duvall led the Norse with 21 points on 8-for-20 shooting (40 percent). Duvall also grabbed 13 rebounds and chipped in four assists.  
  • Ivy Turner dropped a pair of three-pointers over RMU en route to scoring 12 points.  
  • Kailey Coffey scored five points in the contest, going 3-for-3 from the charity stripe. She also tallied six rebounds in her 25 minutes of play.  
  • Carissa Garcia contributed six points and two assists. 
  • Emmy Souder lead NKU with two steals and added four points to the scoreboard.  


FIRST HALF SUMMARY
 

  • Duvall notched the first points of the Horizon League season for NKU with a free-throw and a jumper, putting the Norse up 3-2 in the first minute of play.  
  • Turner kept the game alive and in control with two free-throws, a two-point basket and a three to cap off the first quarter with a 12-11 NKU lead.  
  • The Norse went 5-of-6 (83 percent) from the charity strip in the first quarter.   
  • From the 4:52 mark in the first quarter to the 6:50 mark of the second quarter RMU was held scoreless.  
  • To kick off the second, NKU took control with buckets by Duvall and Irvin, which were both assisted by Turner.  
  • NKU ended the half with a 9-0 run with layups by Emmy Souder and Grayson Rose, giving the Norse a 28-18 advantage at the break.  

SECOND HALF SUMMARY 

  • Kailey Coffey continued the team’s first-half run with two swishes from the charity strip. Turner followed with a behind-the-arc shot, ballooning the Norse run to 14-0. The spurt ended at the 6:53 minute mark in the third quarter with a bucket by RMU. 
  • Duvall had back-to-back threes halfway through the quarter, which was then followed by a quick jumper, bringing NKU up 43-22.  
  • Garcia nailed a long three at the buzzer, ending the third quarter with NKU leading, 48-26.   
  • NKU shot 4-of-5 (80 percent) from the three-point line in the third.  
  • Duvall dished the ball to Coffey in the paint and finished with an and-one at the 9:09 mark. NKU continued into the fourth quarter with an 11-0 run after a three by Rose.  
  • The Norse did not allow RMU to score in the fourth quarter until the 4:05 minute-mark.  

GAME NOTES 

  • Duvall captures her third-straight double-double with a career-high 21 points to go along with 13 rebounds. The last Norse to have three-consecutive double-doubles was when Angela Healy had four-straight in the 2007-08 season against Indianapolis on Jan. 10 (10 points, 13 rebounds), Saint Joseph’s on Jan. 12 (12 points, 16 rebounds), Southern Indiana on Jan. 17 (16 points, 13 rebounds) and Kentucky Wesleyan (15 points, 10 rebounds).  
  • Duvall’s previous career-high in points was 13 against Cincinnati this year (Nov. 25). 
  • Duvall has also surpassed her season-bests in points, rebounds and assists from a year ago at Louisville. She has 66 points, 46 rebounds and six assists on the year compared to a line of 47, 23 and five from a year ago.  
  • Turner’s 12 points was her third double-figures performance of the season.  
  • The Norse continue to pile on the numbers in the rebounding column as they now have a +9.4 average margin (41.6-32.2) against their opponents this season.  
  • The Norse had just six fouls on the day, matching their season-best, and only single-digit total, from last season against Milwaukee (March 5). 
  • NKU ended the game with 13 points coming from second-chance opportunities.
