Senior forward Logan Powell scored a team-high 19 points as Kentucky State University women’s basketball pushed past Clark-Atlanta University for an 84-80 win on Saturday afternoon at L. S. Ebbs Gymnasium.

The Thorobrettes (5-8, 2-4) notched their second consecutive victory over an SIAC opponent and their first win of 2017. The Lady Panthers (5-8, 1-2) have lost four of their last five contest, all against conference opponents.

“We finally had our whole team back and healthy so that helped,” said head coach Terrance Slater. “Logan (Powell) was huge for us today, and that’s what we need and expect from her.”

The 19 point performance by Powell was a season best and is her first double-digit scoring game since the conference opener against Paine College on Nov. 30. She shot 7-of-12 from the floor and hauled in a team-high eight rebounds.

Junior guard Brittani Rizzi hit 4-of-8 from three-point territory as she notched 16 points and four assists. Junior guard Nashaye Sutton, a transfer from Alabama A&M, made her season debut for the Thorobrettes with 11 points and four rebounds.

“We grew up today, and it was a great team win,” said Slater. “I’m really happy for our girls.

KSU will head back to the Capitol City to take on SIAC west division foe, Tuskegee University on Jan 14. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET.
