On the heels of his four straight double-doubles, WKU junior forward Justin Johnson was named Conference USA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, as announced Monday by the league office.

Johnson is WKU Hilltopper Basketball’s first weekly award winner this season and the Hilltoppers’ first overall since George Fant shared the honor on Jan. 12, 2015. This is the first time a WKU player has claimed player of the week honors outright since the program joined C-USA.

It’s the second weekly award of Johnson’s career. He shared C-USA’s freshman of the week award once in 2014-15.

Johnson – a 6-foot-7 forward from Hazard, Ky. – averaged 17.5 points, 12.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists across WKU’s trips to LA Tech and Southern Miss last week.

He averaged a double-double for the second straight week, and his four straight double-doubles is the longest streak of his career. It’s also the most consecutive double-doubles by a WKU player since Fant had eight in a row in 2014-15.

Johnson tallied 23 points and 10 rebounds in Thursday’s loss at LA Tech, then scored 12 points and tied a career high with 15 rebounds in Saturday’s victory at Southern Miss. He shot 56 percent from the field during the week and averaged 33 minutes per game with just one turnover.

Johnson now has nine double-doubles this season and 19 in his career.

The Hilltoppers return to action at home against Marshall at 5 p.m. Saturday at E.A. Diddle Arena.
