University of Louisville sophomore guard Donovan Mitchell has been named to the 2016-17 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 2 first team.
The Greenwich, Conn. product helped lead the Cardinals to a 25-9 record against the nation’s second-toughest schedule by the RPI, a tie for second in the ACC and a No. 10 ranking in the final Associated Press poll.
Joining Mitchell on the NABC All-District 2 first team are Duke’s Luke Kennard, North Carolina’s Justin Jackson, Wake Forest’s John Collins and Florida State’s Dwayne Bacon. Second team selections included Notre Dame’s Bonzie Colson, Virginia’s London Perrantes, NC State’s Dennis Smith, Jr., Syracuse’s Andrew White III and North Carolina’s Joel Berry III.
Mitchell led the ACC in steals (70, 2.0 per game, 23rd in the nation) and led the Cardinals in scoring (15.6 ppg), three-point goals and minutes played (32.3 per game). His 80 three-pointers were the eighth-most in a single season at Louisville. Since scoring 25 points against Indiana on New Year’s Eve, over the final 21 games Mitchell averaged 18.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.1 assists and made 39 percent of his three point shots (59-of-153). His 18.1 scoring average in ACC games was the sixth-best in the league.
Previously, Mitchell was selected to the All-ACC first team, All-ACC Defensive team and the USBWA All-District IV team. He was among the final top 30 candidates for the Naismith Trophy for college basketball player of the year.
