University of Kentucky women’s basketball senior post Alyssa Rice has been named by her peers in the league as the chair of the 2017-18 Southeastern Conference Women’s Basketball Leadership Council, it was announced Thursday by the league office.
“Alyssa Rice, this year’s Chair of the Women’s Basketball Leadership Council has been involved in a leadership role on the council over the past year while serving as vice chair,” said Misty Brown, SEC Director of Student-Athlete Engagement. “She participated in the Autonomy 5 meeting and SEC Spring Meetings this past June.”
The SEC Basketball Leadership Council met earlier this month Birmingham with each men’s and women’s basketball program sending one representative. Rice was selected by the women’s council as the chair and will represent the SEC as an SEC autonomy representative during the NCAA Convention in January. She will also attend a portion of the SEC Spring Meetings in May, and potentially the SEC Athletics Directors meeting in March.
In 2016, the SEC introduced new Student-Athlete Leadership Councils in the sports of football and men’s and women’s basketball in which, in addition to the conference’s longstanding Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), provide student-athletes with additional opportunities to engage with campus leaders and conference office staff.
A native of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Rice has played in 93 career games with 43 starts entering her senior year as a Wildcat. A three-year member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, Rice played in 33 games with 30 starts as a junior, averaging 21.8 minutes per game, 4.2 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per game. She also finished second on the team with 22 blocks last season. Rice was named to the SEC Community Service Team last season and earlier this year traveled with several other UK athletes on a service trip to Panama.
