Three organizations have extended All-America honors to Eastern Kentucky University’s Alex Holderbach.

The junior was selected to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings NCAA Division I All-America Second Team as a catcher. Two catchers were on the first team and one on the second. He was also a second team selection as a catcher to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) 21st Annual All-America Team. Only one catcher was on the first and second teams. Holderbach was chosen as an honorable mention Perfect Game/Rawlings College All-American as a designated hitter.

In addition, Holderbach was chosen to the South All-Region first team by the ABCA and Rawlings. The South Region, one of the most talent-laden in the nation, includes teams from the Southeastern Conference, the Ohio Valley Conference, Conference USA, the Atlantic Sun Conference and the Southern Conference

On June 6, Holderbach was drafted in the 16th round by the Houston Astros in the 2018 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft. He is one of three finalists from across the nation for the 2018 Johnny Bench Award, given annually to the top NCAA Division I catcher. He was one of just 11 players, and the only catcher, from all NCAA Division I teams chosen to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® first team.

Holderbach hit .352 (81-for-230) with 12 doubles, two triples, 18 home runs, 55 runs scored and 79 RBIs. At the end of the OVC tournament, Holderbach led the nation in RBIs, was 11th in total bases (151), 12th in home runs and 28th in slugging (.657).

The first team All-Ohio Valley Conference catcher was also a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, given each year to the top player in college baseball.

Holderbach has a 3.89 grade-point-average while majoring in physical education.

The Eastern Kentucky University baseball program has now had 32 All-America selections.
