The University of Louisville men’s tennis team defeated William & Mary 4-1 in the consolation match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Sunday at Florida’s Charles R. and Nancy V. Perry Indoor Facility.
“It was a really nice bounce-back day today,” said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. “It would have been easy to lick our wounds from a disappointing loss yesterday, but this team showed tons of motivation and fight. This time we won a close doubles point with Lancaster/Wesbrooks clinching it. Fabien won our second point out-battling Quiros who leads their team in wins. Chris fought through some aches and won in three sets for our third point. Then Sergio saw an opportunity to clinch it for us and won a hard-fought match to guarantee our win. Fede and David were both ahead in their matches at the time of the clinch. This team truly has a fighting spirit so now I call them the ‘Fight Squad.’”
UofL (4-2) grabbed the first point of the match with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. The duo of senior Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and freshman Fabien Salle gave their team an early edge with a 6-2 victory over Oren Vasser and Brenden Volk at the No.1 spot. Senior Brandon Lancaster and freshman Alex Wesbrooks clinched the point after beating Tristan Bautil and Finbar Talcott 7-5 on court two.
In singles, William & Mary (0-3) evened the score at the No. 2 spot where Finbar Talcott beat Lancaster 7-5, 6-1. Freshman Fabien Salle put the Cards back on top with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Sebastian Quiros at No. 3. Fellow rookie Sergio Ramirez bested Vasser 7-5, 6-2 to push the lead to 3-1. Morin-Kougoucheff picked up a 7-6 first-set win over Volk, and fell 6-3 in the second, but answered with a 6-1 win in the third to seal the victory.
The Cardinals will return to action next weekend when they play host to Georgia State Friday at 3 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
