The Murray State Racers won two of the three men’s basketball weekly awards given by the Ohio Valley Conference in a vote by the league’s sports information directors for the week of Dec. 31 through Jan. 6.

The Racers were honored to have Ja Morant named OVC Player of the Week and KJ Williams as OVC Freshman of the Week after MSU began league play with home wins over Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky. Williams shared the freshman award with Cameron Williams of SIUE.

Morant, a sophomore from Dalzell, S.C., started the week with 15 points and 13 assists in the Racers’ OVC opening win over Morehead State when he was 6-of-8 from the field. In MSU’s win over Eastern Kentucky, Morant scored 34 points to go with 10 assists and eight rebounds. He hit 12-of-24 from the field and for the week, he averaged 25 points per game, seven rebounds and 11.5 assists and he hit 56 percent from the field and 50 percent from the 3-point line. The award marks the fourth time this season that Morant has been honored.

Williams, a freshman from Cleveland, Miss., certainly did his part in the Racers 2-0 start with the best week of his freshman season scoring 13.5 points per game and grabbing 10.5 rebounds. He also made almost every shot he looked at in going 85 percent on 12-of-14. Against EKU, he scored 13 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds. Against Morehead State, Williams had a perfect game in hitting 7-of-7 for 14 points with eight rebounds.

The Racers begin a four-game road swing Thursday when they play at the Elam Center against the UT Martin Skyhawks in Martin, Tenn. The 7:30 p.m. tip is the second game of a doubleheader at UTM, as the MSU women’s team plays at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Racers move to Cape Girardeau, Mo., and meet Southeast Missouri State in games that tip at 2 p.m. and 4:15 p.m.
