The Murray State track and field team kicked off the Bulldog Open, Friday evening in Birmingham, Alabama and came away victorious in the two events that were held.
With most of the events taking place tomorrow, only the 200m dash and the high jump occurred Friday evening with Tamdra Lawrence and Ashlyn Oren winning their respective events.
Lawrence claimed the top spot on the 200m podium with a time of 24.17, defeating 66 other runners from over 30 schools, including OVC rivals Austin Peay, Belmont, Jacksonville State, and Tennessee Tech. Norma Abdur-Rafia was not far behind Lawrence as she finished fourth with a time of 24.64 while Rachel Hagans ran the race in 25.69 seconds to finish 22nd.
In the high jump, needing to clear 1.70m to win the event, Oren sailed over the bar on her third and final attempt of the night, setting a personal record en route to her first win of the year and her career. Aubrey Main finished tied for second with a jump of 1.65m while Jessikha Ribeiro cleared 1.60m to finish 11th out of 30 competitors.
The Racers will return to the Birmingham CrossPlex tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. for their final day of competing before the OVC championships in two weeks, also in Birmingham.
