In a game that was crucial for both teams’ chances to make the SEC tournament, Kentucky women’s basketball fell to Texas A&M 74-67 on Thursday, Feb. 23 at Reed Arena in College Station.

The Wildcats looked to build some type of momentum heading into the postseason. However, it wasn’t meant to be as the Aggies of Texas A&M held on for the win.

Despite Kentucky’s best efforts, it was an uphill battle from the beginning, struggling to find their rhythm early on, going with their starting lineup of Jada Walker, Adebola Adeyeye, Blair Green, Emma King, and Maddie Scherr.

The Wildcats had to play catch-up from the start, and although they managed to cut the Aggies’ lead to just five points at one stage, they were unable to get over the hump and take control of the game.

Robyn Benton was the top scorer for Kentucky with 21 points, while Ajae Petty contributed 10 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Junior guard Maddie Scherr also made a return from injury, finishing with 18 points, six rebounds, two assists, and three steals.

The Wildcats now sit at 10-17 overall and 2-13 in conference play, and their chances of making the NCAA tournament look slim. However, they still have one game left in the regular season against Tennessee, which will also be their Senior Day, and the Wildcats will hope to finish the season on a high note.

Head coach Kyra Elzy will have a lot to ponder after this defeat, with the Wildcats struggling for consistency all season. But with the postseason just around the corner, Kentucky will have to regroup and come together as a team if they want to make a run.

As the regular season draws to a close, it’s clear that the Wildcats have a lot of work to do if they want to salvage their season. But with a talented roster and a committed coaching staff, there’s no doubt that they’ll be giving it their all in the games to come.
