The Horizon League announced on Tuesday afternoon that Northern Kentucky tennis senior Blaine Carr and freshman Nathan Schwartz were named the Nike® Horizon League Doubles Team of the Week. The honor marks the first for the pair this season and the second for a Norse tandem as Aleksander Sadal and Jorge Rodriguez Agudo garnered the distinction on Jan. 22, with Carr garnering singles player of the week honors.
Carr and Schwartz moved into the No. 1 doubles spot for the first time this season as the Norse opened up Horizon League action against nearby rival Wright State on Saturday evening. The duo picked up a hard-fought victory over Wright State’s Param Pun and Lorenzo Maccarini in an extended set, 7-5, clinching the doubles point for the Norse. NKU went on to defeat the Raiders, 5-2, with Carr and Schwartz picking up victories in singles action as well out of the No. 3 and 2 spots, respectively.
“Blaine and Nathan created numerous opportunities with their commitment to go for their shots,” added head coach Brian Nester. “Their victory gave us the momentum going into the singles matches.”
NKU is back on the court this weekend, hosting IUPUI and UIC. The Norse kick off the weekend on Friday, March 29, against the Jaguars before facing the Flames on Saturday, March 30. Both days will feature the NKU women’s team squaring off against the respective team following the men’s matchup.
