The University of Louisville ranked second among all schools with seven student-athletes named to the 2018 All-ACC Academic Baseball Team as announced by the conference on Tuesday.

Sophomore lefthanded pitcher Nick Bennett, junior righty pitcher Sam Bordner, sophomore infielder Tyler Fitzgerald, junior righthanded pitcher Bryan Hoeing, sophomore outfielder Danny Oriente, sophomore outfielder Jake Snider and junior outfielder Josh Stowers were named to the team from Louisville. Duke had the most players named to the All-ACC Academic Team with nine.

This year’s honor marked the second straight All-ACC Academic Team recognition for Bennett, Bordner and Stowers. Bennett, Oriente and Stowers were tabbed as All-ACC selections for their work on the field this season. Stowers was also honored an All-American this season.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season were also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

Along with qualifying at least seven student-athletes for the All-ACC Academic Baseball Team for the third straight season, the Cardinals also extended their impressive streak in the classroom in the spring registering a 3.23 cumulative GPA, the 14th consecutive semester with a team GPA of 3.0 or better. A total of 27 members of the Louisville baseball team closed the 2018 spring semester with a 3.0 GPA or better.

The current stretch of academic success for the Cardinals dates back to the fall semester in 2011. The span of 14 straight semesters with a team GPA of 3.0 of better coincides with unparalleled success on the field for Louisville, which has three College World Series appearances, five NCAA Super Regional berths, seven NCAA Regional bids and six conference championships during those seven seasons. Earlier this month, the Cardinals baseball program was among 10 UofL athletic teams to post perfect scores in the most recent single-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) data released by the NCAA.

On the field, the Louisville baseball team closed its 2018 season with a 45-19 record overall after advancing to the championship round of an NCAA Regional for the seventh straight season. The Cardinals also registered their seventh straight 40-win season and the 11th in 12 seasons under head coach Dan McDonnell.
