The Eastern Kentucky University women’s golf team recorded its first win of the season, led by Elsa Moberly, on Tuesday at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Ball State University.
Moberly took home the individual win after carding a three-round total of 211, setting a new program record. The record was previously set by her teammate Amanda Lindahl, during her freshman season also at the Cardinal Classic. The Somerset, Kentucky native has shown dominance in every contest thus far, sitting on two wins and a second-place finish.
“I’m in a very positive mind frame right now,” explained Moberly. “This is the best golf I’ve played in a while. It’s nice to go out and help the team.”
The Colonels dominated the first two rounds of the tournament, firing two uncontested totals of 290. Although they added four strokes to their third round total it was still the second best in the field. The first and second round score tied for the sixth lowest single round in program history, while the 54-hole total of 874 is the second-best.
The University of Toledo (882) finished second, eight shots behind the Colonels. Western Michigan (885) was third, host Ball State (897) placed fourth and Bradley (898) was fifth.
Senior Sofie Levin started the tournament tied for 10th shooting a first round score of 75. But came out for her second and third rounds firing all cylinders. After posting a 72 and a round-best of 69 (along with two other players) she moved up the leaderboard to finish tied for fourth.
“We had a great week,” said Head Coach Mike Whitson. “Today we had some rough patches and the way we stayed with it says a lot about our team.”
Freshmen Samantha Sandland (226) tied for 19th and Hannabeth Owens (228) tied for 27th. Lindahl (231) tied for 40th.
The 16 teams competed on the par-72, 6,204-yard Players Club in Yorktown, Indiana.
Eastern Kentucky will participate in the Rocket Classic on Oct. 10-11 at Catawba Island Golf Club.
