Jasmine Bennett had 10 kills with three blocks but it was not enough firepower as the University of Louisville volleyball team fell 25-19, 25-22, 25-19 to No. 7 Southern California Sunday afternoon at the Florida Bubly Invitational in Gainesville.
UofL, 4-2, hit .121 with 6.5 blocks and a pair of aces. USC improves to 5-1, hitting .300 with six blocks and six aces. UofL got 10 kills from Melanie McHenry 10 and five from Megan Sloan. Setter Wilma Rivera had 29 assists with nine digs. USC’s Emily Baptista and Brooke Botkin had 11 kills apiece with setter Raquel Lazaro notching four aces and a match-high 38 assists. The Trojans hit .300 as a team.

Louisville stayed close early in the first set, being within three at 11-8 when Emily Scott scored a kill. But USC used .387 hitting to break open the margin to seven at 19-12, powered by Khalia Lanier’s seven kills. The Cards cobbled together a five point run to get to 21-15 and spark a USC timeout. The Trojan’s regrouped and got to set point on a kill by Lanier. Jasmine Bennett scored twice to stave off set point for the Cardinals but a Cardinal miscue tipped the set to USC 25-19.
In the second set, the teams traded points, until USC had a 7-2 run to go up 17-14. An ace by USC’s Raquel Lazaro put USC up 23-18. The Cards held off set point twice before falling 25-22. Hitting negative for most of the set, UofL upped its accuracy to .054 and had four kills from Melanie McHenry on offense.
In the third set, UofL stayed close but a 5-0 run by the Trojans put USC up 14-8. The Cards scrambled back with a run of their own, sparked by an ace by Claire Chaussee and put Louisville closer at 20-17. But the Cards were outscored 5-2 down the stretch and fell 25-19.
Louisville heads to West Lafayette to play in the Purdue Tournament next weekend. The Cards will face Lipscomb, Xavier and Purdue.
