The Kentucky men’s tennis team wrapped up the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships this weekend with a doubles pair in the quarterfinal and ten singles wins overall.

“This was not the weekend we expected,” head coach Cedric Kauffman said. “We’re one of the best programs in the country and should be doing better. In saying that, we have a young team, some of who were playing their first tournament. Kevin (Huempfner) and Fabian (Penzkofer) did well doubles and I was proud of Cesar (Bourgois) for the way he competed, making the round of 16 and getting his first ranked singles win. We will put this one down as a learning experience and will get back to work even harder Monday morning.”

UK saw five doubles wins in total with freshmen Penzkofer and Kevin Huempfner making the quarterfinal. The duo advanced past 16-seeded Indiana, 8-6, in the round of 64 before defeating IUPUI by the same score. In the round of 32, the pairing took down the fifth-seeded duo from Purdue, 8-6, before coming up short against No. 2 seed Tennessee, 8-3.

Bourgois made the round of 16 after her picked up three wins in total over Austin Peay, Belmont ETSU, including a ranked win over ETSU’s No. 107 Gonzalez. Theo McDonald – a freshman – moved past Memphis, 6-7(2), 6-3, 7-6(1), and Purdue, 6-4, 6-3.

UK will be back in action at the Florida Gulf Coast University Invite in Fort Myers, Florida, on Oct. 26-28.
