WKU Lady Topper Golf surged back into contention Monday at the Little Rock Golf Classic, leaping all the way from 10th place to a tie for first with one round to play.
The Lady Toppers fired a 308 in Sunday’s first round to put them in 10th place, but a 1-over 289 team total Monday has them tied with Missouri State for the lead with 21-over 597 tallies.
WKU’s 289 ties for the fifth-lowest team round in program history, just three shots off the record.
Sophomore Megan Clarke once again led the way for the Lady Toppers, shooting a career-low, 5-under 67 in the second round at the par-72, 6,076-yard Diamante Country Club. That ties Ellinor Haag for the second-lowest single round by a Lady Topper in program history.
Clarke (72-67-139) is one shot back of Missouri State’s Rachel Johnson (71-67-138). Her two-day total of 139 is also a career low.
The Heckmondwike, England, native has played the tournament’s par-5s at 6 under and leads the entire field with 10 birdies. She had six of them Monday to go along with one bogey.
Clarke wasn’t the only Lady Topper who made significant moves, however.
Junior Mary Joiner fired a 1-over 73 to give her a two-day total of 151 (78-73), moving all the way from a tie for 41st to a tie for 17th. She’s tied for the tournament lead with 27 pars.
Junior Bailey Tyree shot an even-par 72 on Monday after an opening-round 81, going from 72nd place to a tie for 25th.
Freshman Lizzie Loy is tied for 36th at 155 (78-77), and junior Abigail Smee is tied for 61st at 159 (80-79).
WKU will be looking to win its second team championship of the fall after also claiming the Boston College Intercollegiate in September.
Tuesday’s final round is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. CT.
